Lake Pigments

$75.00

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

This is the deepest dive we offer into botanical color. We'll cover the processes used to extract and make lake pigments from plants, then grind those pigments into actual paint. We'll make a pigment together from scratch so you see the full process from plant material to pigment paste. We will then work with pigments prepared and dried in advance to make the final paint — lake pigments need time to settle and dry completely before they're ready to grind.

Each date focuses on a different paint medium — watercolor, traditional egg tempera, or walnut oil paint. Each medium requires a different approach to pigment extraction and concentration. Same plants, genuinely different processes and results. Worth trying more than one.

Every class includes a farm tour and overview of current growing operations.

What to bring: Sun and bug protection, water and snacks if you'd like. Wear clothes you don't mind getting colorful. Porta john on site. Dress for the farm and the season. Gloves and aprons available.

Take home:

- 2 small pots of handmade botanical paint in the medium of your chosen date

- A one-sheet reference guide covering all processes from the class, including how to dry and stabilize your paint at home

All sessions count toward ESBA membership.

Groups welcome. Contact us for private bookings.

Notes: Classes held in shade structure on site. Cancelled for rain with full refund.
