Rice Paste Resist & Indigo Follow-Up (2-Part Series)

$145.00

Note for listing: This is a two-part series. Both sessions are included in the single fee and attendance at both is required. Pieces stay on the farm between sessions to dry safely. You will go home after session 2 with clean, damp pieces — plan to lay them flat or hang to finish drying.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours per session

Max of 5 People per Class

This two-part class takes you through one of the most satisfying processes in natural dye, and the reveal at the end is worth every minute of waiting.

In the first session we'll make a rice paste resist together — a versatile material that can be applied by brush, stamp, or stencil to block dye and create an image on organic cotton. You can paint freehand, use geometric block shapes, or work with one of the art stencils available in class. Brushes, stamps, and stencils all provided. Your pieces stay on the farm to dry completely before the second session.

In the second session we'll work with an indigo vat, cover the chemistry behind how it works, and dip your dried pieces. The resist blocks the indigo and your image is revealed — natural cotton against a field of blue. We can also remove the paste and dip again for a second layer, giving you both dark and light blue in the same piece. Two sessions, one very satisfying result.

Every class includes a farm tour and overview of current growing operations.

What to bring: Sun and bug protection, water and snacks if you'd like. Wear clothes you don't mind getting colorful. Porta john on site. Dress for the farm and the season. Gloves and aprons available.

Take home:

- Your 2 finished resist-dyed organic cotton pieces (clean and damp — lay flat to dry)

- A one-sheet reference guide for both processes

- Additional organic cotton blanks available to purchase for $20 each, up to 1 additional per person Click Here
